“My Soul Is A Hidden Orchestra “
Fernando Pessoa, who has a University named after him, was one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century and one of the greatest poets, writers & philosophers in the Portuguese language.
“My soul is a hidden orchestra; I know not what instruments, what fiddle-strings and harps, drums and tamboura I sound and clash inside myself. All I hear is the symphony.”- Fernando Pessoa
This quote seemed to me to be a fitting way to introduce Luísa Mirpuri a Portuguese singer from Lisbon, Portugal in her mid twenties. She is passionate about Music. From her early childhood, together with her twin sister, she would perform duets. They would often present mini shows for family, friends, at school and at karaoke venues.
Driven by a consuming passion Luísa began her music in earnest by taking private singing and piano lessons; to further develop her musical studies she also enrolled in a music school. In a few short years as she began to develop her talent as she took her Music from being an amateur pursuit and began to create a more professional approach. This resulted in obtaining a Degree in Music in the area of Music Education and Choral Conducting. After finishing University she started a Choir group called “Spell Choir” which, later become an Acapella band that won a Television contest entitled “A Capela”. A major part of the TV Award included recording an album for Sony Music - Portugal.
Spell Choir performed at many venues. They also created video clips including a cover of the Portuguese theme entitled “Amar pelos Dois”, which currently has over 100,000 views.
Despite the band’s success, which relied mostly on Pop music covers, Luísa had always had a passion for Jazz and Soul music and began to explore that genre of Music. She began by composing her own material. Collaborating with Producer and Pianist Helder Godinho she released two songs, one in English – “The Spell I Used to Know”- and another in Portuguese – “Naquela Manhã”. (That Morning)
She was booked to perform at various venues in Portugal including the well known Casino Estoril.
At present, she focuses on her new Band, “Jazz Way” made up of two vocalists and a pianist. As the name implies, “Jazz Way” is dedicated to Jazz music and songs from Musical Theatre mainly Broadway shows. Her creativity and inspiration are from a variety of sources. Her compositions and vocal techniques are greatly influenced by Christina Aguilera, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Jorja Smith, Emmaline and Alicia Keys.
She is described by many as organized, determined, focused & hardworking. When she is not performing Luísa is also a Piano and Choir Teacher at the Music Academy of Miraflores, Lisbon. She spends time chilling by going to the gym, listening to music, movies, traveling, playing cards & spending time with her family and boyfriend. Her plans for the immediate future include releasing an album of original songs and a European tour.
