This is the first in a series of write-ups on the eleven bands lined up to perform at the 25th Edition of the oldest Metal Fest in Portugal on January 12th, 2019 - HardMetalFest. There is an interesting Interview Article on José Rocha (the man behind the scenes of the Festival) by Crow’s Nest on Global Music Club.
The 12 Hour Marathon will be opened by Basalto, a Portuguese Metal trio, featuring António Baptista on Guitar, Nuno Mendonça on Bass & João Lugatte on Drums. Yes, you read it correctly… no Vocals!
Basalto released their first album (Basalto) in January 2016 & launched Doença (the Portuguese word for Disease) in February 2018. They will be performing tracks from their latest album at 25th HMF.
The sound from within the stone revealed… Powerful riffs… doom, progressive, stoner & mainly instrumental. There’s a great jam session mood when watching Basalto perform on stage… but don’t be fooled… their compositions are carefully thought out, both melodically & conceptually. Doença is contextualized in a beautifully written text by Martim Sousa, which accompanies the CD Edition.
An interesting fact (which we shall develop further in an upcoming interview with Basalto) is their choice of song naming… Their tracks follow Roman Numerals… Their first release features I, II, III, IV, V & VI. Their album Doença consists of tracks VII, VIII, IX, X, XI & XII.
Well, Basalto, I loved the idea & will be using the same concept for numbering the eleven write-ups on HMF, starting with you: 25th HMF I – Basalto. ;)
